The Satellite Schools program of the Young People’s Chorus of New York City (YPC) was created in 2003 by YPC Artistic Director/Founder Francisco J. Núñez to extend its award-winning, performance-based music education program to additional schoolchildren beyond its core after-school program.
Under Satellite Schools Director Elizabeth Núñez, the program has grown from serving 200 students in three New York City public schools, to working with more than 1,000 children, in grades 3 to 12, in schools in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx.
YPC’s music education method integrates visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning. It is a system that invests in students’ growth; the YPC curriculum is designed to be age and developmentally appropriate, and is scaffolded so students build on learning from one year to the next, developing long-term skills sequentially.
The Satellite Schools Program imparts invaluable life lessons to help children of all backgrounds overcome obstacles and achieve success. By instilling discipline, focus, persistence and other positive attributes in choristers, the Satellite Schools program gives at-risk, underserved students resources to help them accomplish their goals, and introduces them to the idea that they can distinguish themselves using artistic talents and academic means.Visit the website »
